Hello & welcome ! 🙂
Quite a few people requested that I blog about the life span of Makeup and how long it should last for. Each product is different and below I will tell you the lifespan of each but keep in mind it will last even longer or it won’t last as long as it’s supposed to, depending on how you look after your makeup. I keep all of my everyday makeup and backup/spare makeup in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight to avoid it melting, drying up or going off. Some of my makeup products have lasted longer and some haven’t lasted as long so I hope these tips will help you…..<3
Face cleansers: Whether cream or gel, 1 year
Brushes: Brushes can last for years & YEARS!!! It depends on how you look after them and how often you wash them. (Please see below my “How to Clean Makeup Brushes”). Of course the plastic synthetic won’t last as long as the good investment brushes. If you’re looking for a good affordable bunch of brushes to start off with I highly suggest the Real Techniques brushes that are now being stocked at Priceline, or brushes from Gloss.
Sponges: You shouldn’t keep sponges for more than 2 months and these should be washed weekly to clean the dirt and bacteria away.
BB Cream/Tinted moisturiser: If you don’t wear either of these often it’s best to purchase a smaller size rather than the bigger size. Generally if kept in a cool place both products should last you 8-12 months or more.
Foundation: It really depends on the type of foundation. Oil based foundations will last up to 18 months whereas a water based/mousse foundation will last up to 12 months.
Powder: Should last you 2-3 years
Blush: Should last you anywhere from 12 months to 3 years.
Liquid eyeliner: Anywhere from 3-12 months, you will know that it’s spoiled when it has dried up.
Pencil eye liner/lip liner: Will last up to 3 years, remember to sharpen either regularly to avoid bacteria and trapped dirt
Eyeshadow: 3 years or more, depending on the type of eyeshadow product though. Better to be safe than sorry as it is the eye area if you aren’t careful and the product is old it can cause sty’s or other little temporary bumps on the eye area.
Mascara: Mascara expires the fastest and should be thrown out within 4-6 months. You will know it’s expired by the extra clumps & will see that it has dried out.
Lipstick: This is a tricky one as I’ve had some lipsticks last me for only a year and some for 5 years! Some Makeup Artists have said a year then throw away and some just say dispose when the product starts to smell or look off.
Nail Polish: Depending on the quality nail polish should last you anywhere from 12 months to 4 years. Trust me you will know when it has expired.
I hope this has helped you, if you have any questions please feel free to comment below.
